The name change drew attention from tourists
Towns and villages across the county have changed their names for many reasons over the years. From different pronunciations and spellings as time changed, to active attempts at rebranding, place names have been tweaked and fine-tuned over the county.
Essex has so many striking villages, each with their very own claim to fame. We’re so lucky to call so many incredible towns, villages, cities ours – it’s definitely something other counties should be jealous of.
Nestled in the Essex countryside lies just one of our simply stunning villages with a rather curious name. In fact, its name is so curious, it has been renamed
Some name changes have been more successful than others. After £25 million was spend in Purfleet to add an ‘-on-Thames,’ plans were scrapped. But one place along the Essex coast went ahead with its name change, to make it sound more appealing, and has drawn attention from tourists.
Leaning into its coastal location, one area of Southend-on-Sea made the decision to change its name to one that reflected the area. Thorpe, four miles outside the city centre, added ‘Bay’ to match its landscape.
The commuter area changed its name, giving the whole area a rebranding, and matching the name of the closest railway station. The new name not only reflected its beach location, but also as a paradisiacal neighbourhood, known for large houses and beach huts.
The award-winning beach has landscape which mixes shingle and sand along the Thames Estuary. Visitors can also enjoy a selection of cafés and restaurants along the beach, as well as decking and a cycle path.
Thorpe Bay also has a thriving leisure scene, especially popular with those who enjoy an active lifestyle. The area also has a golf club, a yacht club, and a tennis club.
There are also a few schools and churches in Thorpe bay, and its proximity to Southend provides easy access to all the facilities and services in the city there too. It is revered for its commuter value, too, being plonked directly on the c2c line. This takes commuters from the town directly to Fenchurch street in London.
