A Chelmsford restaurant has been revealed to be one of Olly Murs’ favourite places to go for a meal out – and it interestingly serves deep fried ice cream for dessert. The pop star, born in Witham, admitted to being a huge foodie and named several local restaurants he likes to visit.
Olly, 38, was speaking exclusively to EssexLive after a meet and greet session at HMV in Chelmsford when he discussed his favourite places to visit in the county. The hugely talented pop star – whose new album ‘Marry Me’ was released on December 2 – said he enjoys all sorts of cuisines and loves to visit one specific Chinese restaurant in Essex.
He admitted that Zenxi in Chelmsford is one venue he loves to visit when looking to satisfy a desire for Chinese food. The restaurant, on Baddow Road, is one driven past by hundreds given it backs onto Parkway but being just outside of the city centre means it is perhaps not the most obvious choice.

Zebxum who also have a site in Brentwood, specialise in seafood and feature “2-storeys of sleek modern, steel and black decor” according to Google. On its menu, starters vary in price between £6 and £9 each whilst mains were between a tenner and £20.
One stand out item on the menu was the ‘deep fried ice cream’ available for dessert for just under £6. The steamed jumbo prawns with Garlic (£16.95) and the Toblerone cocktail (£6.95) could also tingle the taste buds.
When you walk through the doors of the restaurant you are met with an elegantly designed interior with circular tables and comfy seats. In the corner of the restaurant sits a black grand piano, perfect for if Olly wanted to take part in an out of the blue mini concert.
According to reviews of the restaurant on Google, it is no surprise that pop star Olly likes to drop by. One person said they have “never had a bad meal here”, whilst another said it had “great food and excellent service, good atmosphere too”.
It was even voted as one of the best Chinese eateries in the UK in a prestigious food awards.
“I don’t go to a pub too often but me and the Mrs will occasionally go to Morton where there’s the Dog and Pickle,” Olly told EssexLive. “They do roast dinners and it’s a great place in Essex to go to. I live over in Epping so Sheesh in Chigwell is a nice place to visit.
“I actually went to Alec’s Restaurant in Brentwood recently and that was lovely. But I love Zenxi in Chelmsford – it’s a Chinese. I’ve been there quite a lot recently. Fred and Doug’s in Epping is also good. I love my food!”
Asked whether he’s a good chef himself, he admitted: “I’m terrible! I can make a good omelette but I’m shocking at anything else really. I do make a good sweet and sour chicken, but I don’t do it very often. I did it a while ago for my Mrs and she said I’d banged on about it for so long but she actually found it to be really nice.”
Olly Murs’ new album ‘Marry Me’ was released on December 2 and he goes on tour from April 2023.
