Last week saw one of our very own Essex pubs crowned the best in the UK.
On Monday (September 6) Galvin Green Man was awarded the title at the National Pub & Bar Awards hosted by food critic, Grace Dent.
This pub was opened in 2016 by Michelin-starred, Essex-born brothers Chris and Jeff Galvin.

The awards commended it for its first-class delivery of food, drink, service and all-round pub experience.
Galvin Green Man is located in Great Waltham with 1.5 acres of Essex countryside, and the River Chelmer running through the beer garden – an idylic setting.
It’s not just the National Pub & Bar Awards that think this is a great pub however.
It’s rated 4.5 out of 5 on TripAdvisor, with over 1,500 reviews many of which are positive.
Here are some of the most recent reviews of the UK’s ‘best pub’ on Tripadvisor:
Four legged friends welcome
One recent diner took her dog with her for food at Galvin Green Man and rated the pub 4/5.
They commented on how good the food was, the value for money and how the whole party was treated.
They wrote: “Four adults (and a dog) enjoyed a lovely Sunday lunch outside on the terrace, overlooking lovely countryside. The food was very good and given its quality the price was very reasonable.
“All staff were friendly and attentive, and we were given a very warm welcome. Tables on the terrace were well-spaced which helped us to feel Covid-safe.
“Our dog also received good service and was provided with a large bowl of water – much appreciated given that it was a warm, sunny afternoon.
“Would not hesitate to visit again in the future.”

Catering for allergies
Anyone with a food allergy knows that it can be tricky to find places that can accommodate.
One recent visitor to Galvin Green Man had a great experience of being able to enjoy a meal, knowing that it was safe to eat.
They wrote: “We visited today to celebrate our Daughter’s Birthday with family friends.
“The waitress wished our daughter a ‘Happy Birthday’ on arrival and her dessert had a ‘Birthday’ chocolate on it.
“What really impressed us was the exceptional level of attention paid to our dietary requirements: my wife has a genuine nut allergy and one of our friends has a cheese intolerance.
“Each of them was given an ‘Allergen’ menu listing 17 allergies. Furthermore, my wife was always served first, with the waitress explaining that the meal had been prepared in a separate section of the kitchen to avoid cross contamination. This gave us peace of mind such that she could relax and enjoy her meal (Pan seared fillet of sea bass and lemon posset)
“Both things were much appreciated; we highly recommend this restaurant and shall return!”

Value for money
When one diner discovered that the pub was owned by ‘Galvin’ they didn’t think they would get a table.
However, the pub’s sensible arrangement left them surprised.
They were also surprised at how much their meal came to.
They wrote: “We almost stumbled across this place having tried several other country pubs only to find them either fully booked or closed.
“When I saw that the Green Man had been taken over by Galvin, my heart sank as I thought it would also be fully booked. I needn’t have worried because they operate as both a restaurant and a pub, so whilst the restaurant was fully booked, the pub operates a very sensible first come, first served basis.
“The service was really professional if perhaps a little slow, but the food was amazing. I never thought that I would find myself writing such a glowing report about a Scotch Egg and Burger and fries, but everything was absolutely delicious! Easily the best fries I’ve had and likewise the Scotch Egg, while the burger was also right up there with the best!
“We were also pleasantly surprised by the bill – everything is very reasonably priced – excellent value for money.”
Several reviewers on TripAdvisor commented on how nice of a place Galvin Green Man is for occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries and more.
One recent diner had a similar experience.
They wrote: “Immediately made to feel welcome with a warm and friendly greeting. When seated we were asked if it was a celebration meal and it was my wife’s birthday.
“Throughout the evening if a different member of staff served us they wished my wife a happy birthday which we thought was a lovely touch. With desert my wife received a piece of chocolate with a message on, once again we were impressed.
“The menu isn’t extensive but that’s not a bad thing especially when it’s of the quality it is. We are looking forward to our next visit which won’t be far off. In short the food is excellent with service to match 10 out of 10.”

Another recent visitor really enjoyed their food at Galvin Green Man.
They also commented on how they were treated by the staff.
They wrote: “From the moment you arrive you are greeted by friendly welcoming staff who attend to you straight away. We had a lovely bright table in the Atrium part of the restaurant which was perfect as I love bright airy restaurants.
“We both had a roast and everything on the plate was just amazing. The flavours of all the vegetables was incredible and obviously so well thought through.
“Above all we had such a laugh with the staff who’s attention continued throughout the lunch so we can’t wait to go back.”
