The two magical steam train day-trips setting off from Essex this year

Steam Dreams offers steam train journeys and holidays taking passengers on a vintage experience to scenic villages, cities and even Christmas markets, with incredible views along the way.

This year, the rail company will be setting off from Southend and Colchester.

Here are the day-trips on offer, both with limited availability so interested enthusiasts should act fast.

Southend to Cardiff

Steam Dreams will be departing from Southend on April 16, taking passengers to the Welsh capital of Cardiff.

A vintage diesel, starting at Shoebury station at 6.45am and arriving back at 11pm, stop at Southend Central and Leigh stations along the c2c line to pick up passengers before skirting London, where the steam locomotive joins for the rest of the journey.

The train will steam out through the suburbs along the Thames Valley, following the Great Western Main Line, pass through pretty Bradford-upon-Avon and Bath on its way to the Severn Tunnel. From there, it will emerge to its final destination in Cardiff.

A Steam Dreams spokesman says: “This unique tour offers a fascinating adventure across country through time as we traverse England by steam, travelling past the country’s rich tapestry of rolling scenery and feats of railway engineering, to visit the Welsh capital.

“Spread between an ancient fort and an ultramodern waterfront, compact Cardiff provides an vibrant mix of old and new.”

Colchester to Paignton and Kingswear via Dawlish

Steam Dreams will be departing from Colchester Station on August 9, on a scenic journey to Paignton and Kingswear via Dawlish.

The carriage will depart at 7am from Colchester Station and return at 10.40pm.

The train will stop at stations across Essex, including Witham, Chelmsford and Shenfield, to pick up passengers, crossing London and travelling along the Thames Valley before being joined by a steam locomotive in Taunton.

“From here the panoramic views unfold beyond the window as we run along the estuary of the Exe River,” a Steam Dreams spokesman said.

“Sweeping round the mouth of the river, we run along the seashore for mile after mile before joining the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway where our steam locomotive will be put through its paces as she climbs high above the Devon hills before descending into the Dart Estuary at Kingswear.”

How much are tickets?

Only one ticket type is left for both trips, Pullman Dining.

Available from £425, the price includes meals, drinks and comfortable four or two person seats.
