The Essex town in England’s top 10 for coronavirus infection rates

Basildon is now one of the ten areas of England with the highest coronavirus rates, according to analysis of the latest Government figures.

Another 588 cases of the virus were recorded in the area in the last week, compared to 509 the week before.

Basildon’s infection rate – expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people – is now 314.1, up from 271.9 in the previous seven days.

Southend-on-Sea, Chelmsford, Colchester and Tendring have also recorded an increase in infection rates.

It comes as Essex enters day two of the new Tier 2 restrictions, which have been tightened this time around to ban pubs from serving alcohol unless it is alongside a substantial meal.

Swale in Kent continues to have the highest rate in England, with 867 new cases recorded in the seven days to November 29.

The figures are calculated by the PA news agency based on Public Health England data published on December 2 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.

The figures, for the seven days to November 29, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent four days (November 30-December 3) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to November 28; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to November 28; rate of new cases in the seven days to November 21; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to November 21.
