New plans to turn former 200-year-old pub into Islamic centre

A 200-year old Basildon pub could be turned into an Islamic centre under resubmitted plans.

South Essex Islamic Trust (SEIT) has resubmitted plans to turn the former site of The Barge Inn, on High Road in Vange, into a community centre and place of worship.

The Barge Inn first opened its doors more than 200 years ago but closed down in January 2013 and has been empty ever since.

In October 2019, plans to turn the empty pub into a community centre and Islamic place of worship were met by some opposition from the far-right group, Britain First.

These plans were then rejected due to “traffic generation and parking provision”, but there were no objections to the principle of turning the empty pub into an Islamic Centre.

The revised plan proposes the removal of some of the conservatory, office and shedbuildings to allow for more on site parking to be provided.

The South Essex Islamic Trust (SEIT) has approximately 80-100 members from around Basildon and Pitsea.

The Trust says its current meeting place of Kingswood Pre-School building is no longer suitable and they would like to relocate.
