McDonald’s reveals when it plans to open sixth Chelmsford restaurant as planning application submitted

McDonald’s has shared when it plans to open its latest Chelmsford restaurant – and fans of the fast food giant will not have long to wait. The chain, which already operates five restaurants in the city, is planning to bring a sixth to the Chelmer Village Retail Park.

The new restaurant is set to take the place of Itsu, a Japanese-inspired restaurant which closed in December 2023 after just over a year and a half in business. McDonald’s has applied for planning permission for two “McDonald’s” signs on the vacant unit, plus four golden arches and a freestanding “McDonald’s” sign at the entrance to the retail park on Chelmer Village Way.

McDonald’s has said the new venue will create “significant” new investment and jobs in the area of Springfield and Chelmsford. The chain has now confirmed to EssexLive it plans to have the restaurant up and running by the end of the year.

A spokesman said: “We look forward to progressing with this application, which will bring significant investment and job opportunities to the local area, with the ambition of opening the new restaurant by the end of 2024.”

McDonald’s two planning applications for new signage were submitted and validated by the council on December 18, 2023. They are now pending consideration by a planning committe who will rule whether they can go ahead in the near future. If the signage is approved and the restaurant goes ahead, Chelmsford will have the most amount of McDonald’s restaurants in any Essex town or city.

Other McDonald’s in the city include the branch on the High Street, Boreham Interchange, Robjohns Road, Regiment Business Park and Riverside Retail Park – which is shut until the end of January for renovation works. Other Essex cities Southend-on-Sea and Colchester have four and five McDonald’s restaurants, with Harlow and Basildon having four and five.
