In recognition of International Children’s Book Day (2nd April), Chelmsford-based housebuilder David Wilson Homes has donated a collection of books to youth mental support charity, Kids Inspire.

The donation consisted of 26 brand new books from the charity’s wish list, valued at £200.

Kids Inspire provides mental health and trauma recovery support for young people and their families through a range of therapeutic and community activities in Chelmsford and the surrounding area.

Its mission is to ensure that all children in the UK receive specialist support to empower more positive life choices as they enter adulthood.

International Children’s Book Day, which was founded by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), is a celebration of children’s literature, aiming to encourage young people to develop a love of books and reading.

Each year a different country is chosen to sponsor the awareness day, and this year IBBY Greece has been selected.

Paula Ashfield, Head of Fundraising at Kids Inspire, said: “We are so grateful to have been selected by David Wilson Homes to receive this generous donation of new books.

“Our young people can start their own book club to encourage reading and conversations around literature, and any additional books will go towards our 2023 Christmas appeal.”

Kids Inspire plans to distribute the books to members of its The Voice Forum; a group of young people aged 10-24 years who meet to catch up and discuss their mental health in a safe space.

Titles such as the award-winning ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ by Delia Owens and highly rated ‘All That’s Left in the World’ by Erik J. Brown were among the books donated.

Tom Wright, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties, said: “Encouraging children to read and appreciate literature among the communities in which we build is something we regard as very important.

“As reading is a great facility to improve mental health, we hope that our donation of books to Kids Inspire will encourage more young people to pick up a book and enjoy getting lost in a great story.”

David Wilson Homes is currently building new properties close to Kids Inspire at its Mortimer Place development in Hatfield Peverel.
