Historic Essex castle to host ‘unique’ event with jousting, archery and birds of prey

There will be something to do for the whole family

This Easter, there’s really so much going on in our county for families and friends alike. One such event is something quite extraordinary – you can watch a joust at an historic Essex castle!

Essex residents can go and watch some medieval jousting at Hedingham Castle, as the venue kicks off its first joust of the year! The ‘magnificent’ Knights of Middle England will charge onto the Hedingham battleground in a huge fight to be crowned the champion.

Apart from watching jousts, you can get hands-on with medieval life and try your hand at archery and axe throwing, learn how to fight like a knight and look at exhibits of stunning birds of prey. Hedingham Castle is considered one of the best-preserved Norman keeps in England.

Constructed in 1100, the castle was built by the de Veres in the late 11th and early 12th centuries, with the Keep, a type of tower within castles, added in the 1130s and 1140s. During the medieval event, you can explore all 4 floors of the castle.

When it’s time to refuel, visitors can enjoy a range of hot and cold refreshments from the food stalls, and browse artisan merchant stands for the perfect souvenir. The venue says that it is set to be a ‘truly unique and action-packed day out for the whole family’.
