Essex Police has released an important update on a serious incident on the A12 this afternoon (Thursday, August 20).
The road has been closed in both directions at Marks Tey since 1.40pm.
It is because of a serious crash near junction 25.
In a statement, the police said: “We have closed the A12 near Marks Tey following a serious collision on the northbound carriageway at around 1.40pm today, Thursday 20 August.
“The road has been shut in both directions while we carry out our enquiries.
“The southbound diversion has been put in place at junction 25.”
An air ambulance has been pictured at the scene, but it is not yet clear if anyone has been injured.
Traffic is getting worse, with more than 20 miles of delays on surrounding roads.
On the Northbound A12, queues are now close to Witham, wit drivers in around eight miles of standstill traffic.
The other side of the road is also suffering.
Traffic is now beyond Colchester Stadium, and very heavy for around nine miles.
Nearby, the A120 is also full of congestion, with four miles of traffic between Marks Tey and Coggeshall.
Te road is likely to be closed for some time, so drivers are advised to avoid the road and find alternative routes.
