Essex continues to be an incredibly popular area of the country to move to.
Brilliant transport connections, wonderful countryside, classic seaside towns and modern towns and cities are all reasons people choose to buy a property in Essex to settle down.
Now that we’re in 2021, we’re able to look at which areas of Essex were especially popular during 2020.
Throughout last year, more than 13,000 properties changed hands in Essex alone.
Between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020, 13,455 houses, flats and maisonettes were bought.

That’s according to data from the Land Registry – a government organisation which logs the sales of properties nationwide.
However, the data for 2020 shows that some areas have clearly been more popular than other areas of Essex.
The most popular area of the county was Colchester, Essex.
In 2020, 1,806 properties changed hands in the Colchester district – which includes the town of Colchester along with places like Wivenhoe, Tiptree and West Mersea.
The most expensive home bought last year was a detached home on Kelvedon Road in Tiptree.
That fetched nearly £3.5m.
Another area of the county which was popular with buyers was Southend-on-Sea.
This area is Essex’s most populous borough, and includes towns like Southend-on-Sea, Westcliff-on-Sea, Leigh-on-Sea and Shoeburyness.
Here, 1,769 properties were sold within the same 12-month period.
The most expensive home sold was a semi-detached home on Mess Road in Shoeburyness, which sold in December for £2.4m.
Looking at the entire county, the least popular areas to move to in 2020 were Maldon, Harlow and Brentwood.
The most popular type of property sold were detached properties; 4,103 of these changed hands in 2020.
Out of the 13,455 properties sold in 2020, only 912 were new-builds.
