The shopping centre would normally be packed full of shoppers at this time of year
With just five days to go until Christmas, Lakeside Shopping Centre would normally be packed full of shoppers at this time any other year.
You would expect to see people dashing around buying last minute presents for the big day.
However, today was a different story.
Pictures from outside the shopping centre show the complex almost completely deserted on the first day of Tier 4 after new restrictions were announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday (Saturday, December 19).
The new restrictions, which came in to force at 0.01am this morning, mean that all non-essential shops have had to close.
This means that the majority of stores at Lakeside shut their doors at 9pm yesterday and won’t reopen until 2021, with only essential shops still open.
The shopping centre in West Thurrock, Essex, announced yesterday that from today they would be closed for everything but essential retail.
Included in the closures is their Christmas Wonderland.
The centre itself will stay open for its normal hours, but this is subject to change.
Under the Tier 4 restrictions, shops are allowed to offer click and collect services so this may still be available at some stores at Lakeside, but individual brands are yet to be confirmed.
