Bomb disposal squad rush to reports of ‘unexploded bomb’ on Essex street

Police and a bomb disposal team descended on Canvey Island after reports of an “unexploded bomb” on a residential street.

Officers received reports shortly after 12noon today (Thursday, October 1) that the item had been found by a workman on Castle View Road, near to Castle Point Golf Club on the north of Canvey Island.

A cordon was erected in the area as residents reported seeing an ongoing police investigation.

The Ministry of Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called to the scene and assessed the object, before confirmed that it wasn’t deemed to be explosive.

The item was moved and disposed of by officers.

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: “We were called shortly after 12pm on Thursday, October 1, with reports what appeared to be an unexploded bomb had been found by a workman in Castle View Road, Canvey.

“A cordon was put in place while the Ministry of Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended and assessed the object.

“It was not deemed to be explosive or live ammunition and was removed and disposed of.”
