A12 to remain partially closed for hours after multi-vehicle crash

A section of the A12 near Chelmsford is closed following a crash.

Essex Police are at the scene of the multi-vehicle crash northbound between junctions 16 for Galleywood and 17 for Howe Green.

The incident happened shortly before 6pm today (Friday, October 23).

Police have released a statement on the crash: “We are on scene of a multi-vehicle collision on the northbound A12 between junctions 16 for Galleywood and 17 for Howe Green.

“It happened shortly before 6pm today (Friday 23 October) and the road is closed.

“No-one is believed to have been seriously injured.

“The carriageway is likely to stay shut for at least the next couple of hours and officers are now in the process of trying to release the vehicles currently stuck in traffic.

“Officers will be carrying out a staged turn-around of the vehicles.

“We would urge drivers to wait for direction by the officers on the scene to ensure this is done in a safe and managed way.

“We appreciate your patience and understanding.”

The diversion route is listed below:

  • Exit the A12 at J15 Webbs Farm and follow the A414 to the A414/A1114 roundabout.
  • At the roundabout take the second exit onto the A4114.
  • At the next roundabout take the first exit and continue on the A1016 to the
    A1016/A130 roundabout.
  • At the roundabout take the second exit and continue on the A130 to rejoin A12
    northbound at J19 Boreham Interchange.
